Persuasive writing, also known as the argument essay, utilizes logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea. It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view or to take a particular action.
A Deeper Look Into Anorexia: We sometimes break when times get hard. Anorexia, for example, is one of those breaking points. For all of you that are reading this, especially those that are affected by this the most, teenage girls to young adult women, do you think anorexia should be said to be based on sociocultural factors or would you say that somewhere down the line it is caused by biological factors.
Read my blog below to find out more! Anorexia nervosa is a very serious eating disorder that develops when one decides to stop eating. Many have differing opinions when it comes to stating why and how this problem has evolved. Some feel as though society has played the impact for this occurrence.
Others, however, feel as though subconscious factors are the reasoning. The teenage population all the way up to young women today ages have been constantly burdened with the pressures to stay thin for most of their teenagers lives. Does society play a key role in causing these pressures?
Why has our youth come to this? Whatever happened to beauty is only skin deep? Individuals have become so obsessed with body image that they have forgotten the true meaning of happiness.
Biological factors should not be a reason for the development of anorexia. Researches and scientists have done testings on victims with anorexia and have said to have found genes that contain similarities with anorexia on chromosome one 1. Evidence that supports this claim includes the experiment that was conducted that lead them to this discovery.
Researchers then came to find out that there was strong evidence that linked these victims to genes on chromosome one 1. Although this experiment and discovery seem valid when read, one must realize that the genes that were discovered to link with anorexia are not in any way evidence that there is or are any specific genes that cause this disease to develop; there was simply a similarity that was found 1.
If this were the case, individuals would stop eating at ages other than the norm. Children would stop eating all together at ages such as three and four years old and elders would stop eating at a variety of ages as well.
When one reaches the turning point into the teenage years, they begin to see the desire to be thin flow all around them; as they walk down the hallways at school, as they watch television, and as they surf the internet.
I feel as though researchers and scientists are desperately trying to obtain any ounce of information they can that shows anorexia as genetically linked, even if that ounce of information is vague and ambiguous.
Biologically speaking, the eating spot on the brain resides on the hypothalamus; more specifically, the ventromedial and lateral hypothalamus 7. The hypothalamus is a region of the brain that acts as the control center for a variety of different vital processes such as appetite for example.
Experiments have been done on lab animals and few discoveries have been made. These two areas of the hypothalamus work together to keep the brain operating correctly and fulfilling its duties and in turn, keeps the body at a set body weight called the set point 7.
Destruction to either of these area of the hypothalamus can cause problems in the brain and alter the set point to a new degree; eating is then altered as well and can cause the animals to die off due to starvation 7.
Although lab testings can be proven effective in some situations, stating that anorexia is linked to the hypothalamus of the brain cannot be based on lab testings of animals.
This information is entirely too underdeveloped and should not be taken factually until further discoveries have been made.
If biological factors were to blame, then why has anorexia not been as common in years past? Celebrities are all over the television, on front pages of magazines, and on the internet.
The silhouette of most celebrities seem flawless, with their porcelain skin glowing and their immaculate figure beaming. However, what most people seem to forget is that airbrushing and editing are magical tools in the media world.
This is extremely common in Hollywood, making celebrities look like God spent a little extra time on them. When young girls see their favorite actresses or singers in the media looking stick thin, they then want to look and become just like them. Therefore, starving themselves to do so, which usually ends in failure.
Inone of out every to girls between the ages of thirteen and twenty-two was found to be anorexic 2. These numbers have increased drastically and will only continue to increase until something is done, but what? Decreasing the amount of celebrity publicity is one option; however, we all know this would never happen.
Our society is so obsessed with Hollywood that minimizing anything closely related to this would be unthought of. Ultimately, it is up to parents and guardians to enlighten their children and loved ones about this illness and to preach to our youth that beauty is not measured on a scale, for it is measured within.
The question, why has anorexia continued to drastically increase in recent years follows with the answer relating back to celebrities in Hollywood and their constant thrive to be accepted and remain out of the tabloids.
If biological factors were to blame, then it would be safe to say that most everyone in Hollywood would contain the same gene or genes.Sample Essay on Anorexia.
